The Shōnan-Shinjuku is a line connecting the very north of the greater Tokyo region - Saitama and even as far as Tochigi and Gunma prefectures - with the southern Shōnan resort area, via mainly Shinjuku Station in Tokyo.
The Shōnan-Shinjuku Line is best known for providing a direct line between Shinjuku and Yokohama. But this broad-reaching JR East train service makes Yokohama, and the coastal Shonan area beyond it, easily accessible even from north of the greater Tokyo region. Shonan is south-west of Tokyo on Sagami Bay, and includes the renowned resort areas of Kamakura, Fujisawa, Odawara and Hakone.
The Shōnan-Shinjuku Line has no dedicated track of its own. Although considered a train line in its own right, the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line uses sections of six different lines, including part of the Yamanote Line, adding a convenient long-distance, often express, transport option - generally one or two trains per hour - to the daily train schedule of each station served by the line.
The Shōnan-Shinjuku Line covers a distance of over 150 km.
Shonan-Shinjuku Line History
The Shōnan-Shinjuku Line was launched in 2001. Before that, north-south train travel in Tokyo was centered on Tokyo's two big eastern stations: Ueno Station and Tokyo Station, necessitating changes there. And getting from Shinjuku to Yokohama meant having to change trains at Shibuya. The Shōnan-Shinjuku Line provides easy north-south continuity between via Tokyo's most-used station Shinjuku Station in the west (although, there are inevitable quirks with a line this complex, meaning some trains do actually go eastwards via Tokyo Station.)
Shonan-Shinjuku Line Layout
The main scope of the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line is between Ōmiya in the north and Ōfuna in the south. At both Ōmiya and Ōfuna, the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line splits both east and west.
At Ōmiya in the north the line splits westwards on the Takasaki Line (on up to Takasaki and Maebashi in Gunma Prefecture) and eastwards on the Utsunomiya Line (on up to Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture).
At Ōfuna in the south, the line splits westwards on the Tokaido Main Line (out to Odawara) and eastwards on the Yokosuka Line (down to Kamakura and then Zushi).
Train Services on the Shonan-Shinjuku Line
There are three services on the Shonan-Shinjuku Line: the ordinary, local futsū service stopping at every station, the express, or "rapid," kaisoku service, and the super-express, or "special rapid," tokubetsu kaisoku.
There are usually two, sometimes three or four, trains per hour in the morning and evening commuter rush hours - mostly local or rapid, with special rapid trains running mostly from mid-morning to mid- or late-afternoon.
The times of the first and last train vary widely, depending on the station and on the direction the train is heading.
Please note that the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line is just one of the several train services available at each station listed bellow. Many other trains also serve each station throughout the day - they just won't take you as far or as quickly.
Shonan-Shinjuku Line Stations
The Shonan-Shinjuku Line traverses sections of six different railway lines:

Utsunomiya Line 宇都宮線
Utsunomiya Station 宇都宮駅
Utsunomiya Station is in Utsunomiya, the capital city of Tochigi prefecture. Sights to see if you happen to be here include Futarayama Shrine, just 10 minutes' walk from the West Exit of JR Utsunomiya station, and a reconstruction of Utsunomiya Castle, about 1.5 km south-west of the station, on the other side of the Tagawa river.
Transfer at Utsunomiya Station to the Tōhoku Shinkansen, the Nikkō Line, and the Karasuyama Line.
Suzumenomiya Station 雀宮駅
Suzumenomiya Station is in Utsunomiya City. This station, with a modern, domed design dating from 2011, faces a pleasant, landscaped rotary with bus and taxi stops. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) runs by just 400 meters west.
Ishibashi Station 石橋駅
Ishibashi Station is in Shimotsuke City, Tochigi Prefecture. The front of the station features a quaint medieval European-style clock tower supposedly inspired by Grimms fairy tales. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) runs by just 250 meters west.
Jichiidai Station 自治医大駅
Jichiidai Station, in Shimotsuke City, Tochigi Prefecture, is named for its proximity to the Jichi Medical University (Jichi Iryō Daigaku), just 300 meters north. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) runs by just 100 meters west.
Koganei Station 小金井駅
Koganei Station is in Shimotsuke City, Tochigi Prefecture. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) runs by just 100 meters west.
Oyama Station 小山駅
Oyama Station is in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) and Oyama City Hall are just 500 meters west. Hakuō University is 1 km west of Oyama Station.
Transfer at Oyama Station to the Ryōmō Line, the Mito Line (both of which start at Oyama Station), and the Tōhoku Shinkansen.
Mamada Station 間々田駅
Mamada Station is in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) runs by just 250 meters west.

Nogi Station 野木駅
Nogi Station is in Shimotsuga-gun, Tochigi Prefecture. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) runs by 1 km west. The huge nature reserve, Watarase Ryokuchi Park, is about 2.5 km west of Nogi Station.

Koga Station 野木駅
Koga Station is in Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Koga Historical Museum is about 10 minutes walk west of the station. Koga Golf Course is about 1.5 km west of Nogi Station, and, beyond it, the huge nature reserve, Watarase Ryokuchi Park. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) runs by about 800 m east.
There are no transfers at Koga Station. Shin-Koga Station on the Tōbu Nikkō Line is 2 km west.
Kurihashi Station 栗橋駅
Kurihashi Station is in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture. Buses leave from the East Exit. The Kurihashi International Country Club is about 1.5 km north-east of Kurihashi Station, across the Tone River. The Nikkō Highway (National Route 4) runs by about 1 km east.

Higashi-Washinomiya Station 東鷲宮駅
Higashi-Washinomiya Station is in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture. There is a big Daiei store in front of the East Exit. National Route 3 runs by about 300 m west.

Kuki Station 久喜駅
Kuki Station is in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture. The big Cookie Plaza shopping center is out the West Exit.
Transfer at Kuki Station to the Tōbu Ikesaki Line, which goes all the way north-west to Ikesaki, and has several branch lines. Changing at Ikesaki to the Ryōmō Line takes you to Maebashi at the northernmost end of the other northern branch of the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line, the Takasaki Line.
Shin-Shiraoka Station 新白岡駅

Maebashi is the capital city of Gunma prefecture and is well known for its cultural achievements.
Maebashi is on the Ryōmō Line. Very few Shōnan-Shinjuku Line trains serve Maebashi, and only in the very early morning and very late at night.
Shin-Maebashi Station 新前橋駅
Shin-Maebashi Station is in Maebashi City, Gunma.

Takasaki Station 高崎駅
Takasaki Station is a major station in Takasaki City, Gunma. There are extensive shopping facilities around Takasaki Station, including department stores and major electronics/home appliance stores. The Takasaki Tower Museum of Art is very near the east exit, and the Takasaki Municipal Art Gallery is just a little south of the west exit. Takasaki City Hall is about 8 minutes west of the station.
Transfer at Takasaki Station to the Jōetsu Shinkansen, Hokuriku Shinkansen. Takasaki Line, Hachikō Line, Jōetsu Line, Ryōmō Line, Agatsuma Line, Shin'etsu Main Line, and the Jōshin Line.
Numerous highway buses to destinations such as Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, Niigata, Kanazawa, Osaka, Sendai, and more, leave from Takasaki Station.
Kuragano Station 倉賀野駅

Okabe Station 岡部駅
Okabe Station is in Fukaya City, Saitama prefecture. Fukaya City Hall is about 5 minutes walk west from Exit 2 of Okabe Station. Saitama Institute of Technology is about 12 minutes walk south of the station.

Fukaya Station 深谷駅
Fukaya Station is in Fukaya City, Saitama prefecture. Fukaya Station is an architectural folly, being a huge, grandiose brick-facade structure modeled on Tokyo Station. This is because the bricks for Tokyo Station were made at a factory near here.

Kumagaya Station 熊谷駅
Kumagaya Station is a big station in Kumagaya City, Saitama prefecture, with a lot of shopping around it, especially out the Sakura Hiroba Exit.

Konosu Station is the northernmost station on the Takasaki Line that has more than just local Shonan-Shinjuku trains traveling northwards, as opposed to just southwards. An hourly special rapid train runs northwards, too, between about 11 am and 6 pm.

Ageo Station is in Ageo City, Saitama prefecture. There is quite a large shopping area around Ageo Station. Ageo Station's claim to fame is the Ageo Riots of March 13, 1973, when thousands of commuters ransacked the station in response to an industrial go-slow by railway workers there.

Miyahara Station 宮原駅

Ōmiya Station 大宮駅（埼玉）
Ōmiya Station is a major station in Ōmiya Ward, Saitama City. It serves numerous lines and is located in the middle of a large, bustling commercial district. The Railway Museum is one stop north on the New Shuttle.

Urawa Station 浦和駅
Urawa Station is a major station in Urawa Ward, which is the administrative center of Saitama City. There are large retail facilities both east and west of the station, with the big Urawa Parco shopping complex just to the east. Saitama Prefectural Office and the Saitama District Court are about 10 minutes west, and Saitama City Office about 12 minutes walk north-west, of Urawa Station.

Ōsaki Station 大崎駅
Ōsaki Station in Tokyo's Shinagawa ward is the commercial center of the ward (as opposed to Shinagawa Station a kilometer north-east which is more for those passing through). Ōsaki is a big, modern concentration of offices, shopping, dining and entertainment, mainly on its east side, with the nearby Otani New City shopping mall with the Shinagawa Cultural Foundation's very mod O Art Gallery (free entry) on the 2F showing "citizens' art" and, just southwards, the massive "city-within-a-city" of Gate City Ōsaki with its Gate City Plaza restaurant complex. Rissho University is about 6 minutes walk from the West Exit of Ōsaki Station.
Transfer at Ōsaki Station to the JR Yamanote Line, the JR Saikyō Line and the TWR Rinkai Line. The Saikyō Line technically terminates at Ōsaki Station, but many Saikyō Line trains continue on on the Rinkai Line tracks through to Odaiba and as far as Shin-Kiba (however, the section past Ōsaki is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass, as the Rinkai Line is not a JR line.)

Nishi Ōi Station 西大井駅
Nishi Ōi Station is in Shinagawa ward, Tokyo. At the south-west end of Nishi-Ōi Station is the grave of the famous Japanese prime minister, Hirobumi Ito (1841-1909)

Musashi-Kosugi Station 武蔵小杉駅
Musashi-Kosugi Station is in Nakahara Ward, Kawasaki City. "Musashi-Kosugi Station" is actually made up of two stations belonging to different railway companies, and one of those stations comprises two different buildings.
The Japan Rail "two-building station" has a north-east ground-level building, and a south-west elevated building serving different lines, both buildings being joined by a 400 meter walkway.
Tokyu Railway's "Musashi-Kosugi Station" is right next to the north-east station building and serves the Tōkyū Tōyoko and Tōkyū Meguro lines.
JR's ground-level north-west station building, with platforms 1 and 2, serves the Nambu Line. JR's elevated south-eastern station building, with platforms 3 and 4, serves the Yokosuka Line (the Yokosuka Line being another name for this section of the Tōkaidō Main Line) on which the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line and Narita Express run.
The other station building, to the north-west, has more shopping and dining facilities around it.
Transfer at Musashi-Kosugi Station to the Yokosuka Line, the Narita Express, the Shonan-Shinjuku Line's own Super View Odoriko service, the Nambu Line, the Tōkyū Tōyoko and Tōkyū Meguro lines.
Shin-Kawasaki Station 新川崎駅
Shin-Kawasaki Station is in Saiwai Ward, Kawasaki City. Yumemigasaki Zoo Park is about 8 minutes walk west of the station. Kashimada Station on the Nambu Line is 4 minutes walk east of Shin-Kawasaki Station. Most of the shopping is on the east side of the station.

Yokohama Station 横浜駅
Yokohama Station, in Nishi Ward, Yokohama City, is a major railway hub and one of the busiest stations in Japan.

Hodogaya Station 保土ヶ谷駅
Hodogaya Station is in Hodogaya Ward, Yokohama City. The West Exit is surrounded by a small shopping area. The East Exit has a walkway over the Tokaido Highway (National Highway 1) to a bus station.

Totsuka Station 戸塚駅
Totsuka Station is in Totsuka Ward, Yokohama City. This busy station is in the middle of a heavily built-up commercial area, surrounded by stores, malls, supermarkets, department stores and banks. Totsuka Ward Office is just out the East Exit. The Kashio River runs alongside the station.

Ōfuna Station 大船駅
Ōfuna Station is in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. This 11-track station is in the middle of a heavily built-up commercial area, surrounded by stores, malls, supermarkets, department stores and banks - starting with the Lumine Wing mall that occupies the station's east exit. The Kashio River runs alongside the station. Ōfuna Kannon Temple with its 25 meter (82 foot) high Buddha statue - clearly visible from the station - is just 2 minutes walk west of the river. Josenji Temple and its extensive man-made Taya Cave complex is a short bus ride north of Ōfuna Station.
There is a large bus stop area on the east side of the station just south of the Shonan Monorail Station, another out of the West Exit across the Kashio River and then another just south of it.
Transfer at Ōfuna Station to the local Yokosuka Line train, the Tokaido Main Line, the Narita Express, the Negishi Line, and Yokohama Line and the Shonan Monorail.
From Ōfuna, some Shonan-Shinjuku Line trains continue on to the Yokosuka Line, which branches eastwards.
Fujisawa Station 藤沢駅

Chigasaki Station 茅ヶ崎駅
Chigasaki Station is in Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Buses depart from both the North Exit and South Exit of the station. Chigasaki City Hall is 5 minutes walk from the North Exit. The Tōkaidō Highway (National Highway No.1) is 360 meters north of Chigasaki Station.

Hiratsuka Station 平塚駅
Hiratsuka Station is in Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture. There is a shopping mall immediately out the North Exit. Buses depart from both north and south exits. Hiratsuka City Hall is 11 minutes walk from the North Exit. The (very modern) Hiratsuka Museum of Art is 12 minutes walk from the North Exit. The Tōkaidō Highway (National Highway No.1) is 600 meters north of Hiratsuka Station.

Ōiso Station 大磯駅
Ōiso Station is a very small station in Naka-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture, and from Exit 1 (on the south side) it is less than 10 minutes walk to Ōiso Beach, across the Tōkaidō Highway (National Highway No.1).

Ninomiya Station 二宮駅
Ninomiya Station is in Naka-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture. There is a Tourist Information Center near the North Exit, and, a little beyond it, the Ninomiya Town Office. Radiant Flower Hill Park is a pleasant public park less than a kilometer north-east of Ninomiya Station.
Ōiso Golf Course is about 1.5 km east of the station along the nearby Tōkaidō Highway (National Highway No.1)

Kozu Station (Kanagawa) 国府津駅 (神奈川)
Kozu Station is in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The seaside is less than a minute's walk from Kozu Station, across the Seisho Bypass road. Kozu is the terminal station of the Gotemba Line, which ends at Numazu.

Kamonomiya Station (Kanagawa) 鴨宮駅（神奈川）
Kamonomiya Station is in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. There are some stores and restaurants around the station, but the nearest shopping malls and supermarkets to Kanomiya Station are about 10-15 minutes' walk north, and north-west in the adjoining Nakazato district.

Odawara Station 小田原駅
Odawara Station is in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Odawara Castle is 10 minutes' walk from the East Exit. The seaside is just over 1 km south-east of Odawara Station as the crow flies.
Odawara's main use is as a transfer point to go to the resort area of Hakone. Transfer at Odawara Station for other train services on the Tokaido Line, the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Odawara Line (Odakyu Electric Railway), the Daiyuzan Line (Izu-Hakone Railway), and the Hakone Tōzan Line.

Kita-Kamakura Station 北鎌倉駅
Around Kita-Kamakura Station are numerous imposing and picturesque temples, such as Engakuji with its massive bell, Shozokuin a sub-temple of Engakuji with its Shariden housing a tooth said to be of the Buddha, Tokeiji the "Divorce Temple," Jochiji with its "Nectar Well," Meigetsuin the "Hydrangea Temple," Kenchoji the "grandfather of Japan's Zen temples," Ennoji dedicated to the "Ten Judges of Hell," and various sub-temples - within easy walking distance.
The station building is by the platform for Tokyo-bound trains. Changing to the other platform involves crossing a level crossing. However, the station is barrier-free, and includes an elevator.

Kamakura Station 鎌倉駅
Kamakura Station is in richly historical Kamakura.
Kamakura Station is the terminal station of the Enoshima Electric Railway, next to the JR station.

Zushi Station 逗子駅
Zushi Station is in Zushi City and is the last Shonan-Shinjuku Line stop on the Yokosuka Line (although the Yokosuka Line continues on for five more stations, ending at Kurihama). Zushi Station's "West Exit" is actually on its north side, and the "East Exit" is actually on the station's south side. The "East Exit" is where most of the commercial and other facilities are to be found, and is where local buses and taxis leave from. Zushi City Hall is 3 minutes walk south of the station.
